DAVE HESS JR BECOMES 8TH DIFFERENT FLYNN'S TIRE/GUNTER'S HONEY TOUR WINNER OF 2025 AFTER HIS $4000 ERIEZ VICTORY; 52 HOVIS RUSH LATE MODELS COMPETE IN MFG NIGHT PRESENTED BY MSD AS $34,000 OF VALUABLE PRODUCTS ARE DISTRIBUTED
By Mike Leone
August 10, 2025 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Erie, PA)...The Hovis Auto & Truck Supply RUSH Dirt Late Model Flynn's Tire/Gunter's Honey Touring Series returned to Eriez Speedway for the second and final time of the 2025 season on a sunny and stifling hot Sunday evening. Fifty-two drivers from six states plus Ontario, Canada turned out for race #10 of the 2025 season as it was the annual "Manufacturers Night" presented by MSD Performance, which saw $34,000 in valuable product contingencies distributed! In addition, it was also "Manufacturers Night" presented by MSD Performance for the RUSH Stock Cars as a record 16 cars were on hand for the growing class as those drivers shared in $9,000 of valuable products bringing the total distributed to the two divisions to approximately $43,000!
Dave Hess, Jr. is one the greatest drivers to ever compete at Eriez Speedway dominating the Super Late Model and UMP Modified ranks over the years; in fact, no other driver has won more Super Late Model features at the track. On Sunday, Hess denied 2017 Series Champion, Bryce Davis, of a clean sweep of the night for the second straight Flynn's Tire/Gunter's Honey Touring Series event. Hess took the lead on a restart on lap 11 and kept 2021 Series Champion, Kyle Hardy, at bay over the final laps to score the $4,000 victory- his first in RUSH Tour competition at his home track. Hess became the 8th different winner in 10 events thus far this season. Hess also won one of the top prizes in the manufacturers night drawings receiving a 4150 LTS Aluminum Ultra XP 650 CFM Holley Carburetor valued at $1,184 bringing his night's total cash and contingencies to well over $5,200.
"These RUSH races are so tough with the competition level," stated the 41-year-old Waterford, Pa. standout. "I've said it before but they are as tough as any regional tour and damn near as tough as any national tour. To get qualified and get a good starting spot is so crucial as everyone is so equal and good. Bryce (Davis) had me searching. Last night he was better than us all night and tonight was the same story so we took big swings after the dash and went with the harder tire and everything seemed to work out for us. Thanks to Bryce and Kyle (Hardy) for racing me clean down to the end with the double-file restarts as it's always a blast racing with these guys".
"Great track tonight as the guys at Eriez have given us the best racing surface in the area by far all season long so hats off to them for getting it figured out," added Hess. "Thanks to Vicki (Emig) and the whole RUSH crew for all these great giveaways; I know someone had to work their ass off to get these giveaways for us. Everything she does for the RUSH Tour is great and I'm glad we could be a part of it."
Following the Dave Poske's Performance Parts "Feel the RUSH" 4-Wide Salute, Davis took off in the lead for the second straight night following his Sunoco Dash win as Hess settled into second over Austin Allen, Hardy, and Zack Carley. As Davis pulled away from the pack on lap five, fourth starting Allen was all over Hess in the battle for second. Hardy then challenged Allen for the third spot when Demetrios Drellos slowed with a flat tire with 10 laps scored.
Davis chose the inside for the double file restart, but it was Hess making the outside work as he took the lead for what would be the winning move on lap 11, while Hardy snuck by Allen for third. Jeremy Wonderling started in seventh and cracked the top five when racing resumed on lap 11 then one-lap later passed Allen for fourth. Hardy went after Davis and the two raced side-by-side for second on lap 16. While those two battled, Hess increased his advantage by lap 18. Davis and Hardy continued their battle as they once again raced side-by-side on lap 21 as Davis continued to hold on. A caution for Drellos' spin slowed action with 23 laps completed.
When racing resumed on lap 24, Davis was unable to make the outside work like Hess did and also lost second to Hardy in turn four. Carley was unable to exit the track as he needed assistance back to the pit area necessitating the event's final caution with 28 laps scored. That set-up a two-lap dash to the finish between two of the best Late Model racers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.
Hess got a great restart and held off Hardy to the checkered flag by 0.974 seconds for his second career Flynn's Tire/Gunter's Honey Tour victory aboard the Alex Anderson-owned, Close Racing Supply/Hess Garage/Furniture Towne/Anderson Motorsports Stables/Spencer Motorsports/Martin Dynamics/Sanger Investments/Lakefront Renovations/Polchosky Excavating-sponsored #44.
Hardy's second place was his best Tour effort of 2025, which was worth $2,000, as he continues to hold down the runner-up spot in points. "It's a good rebound after a 10th last night," acknowledged the 32-year-old Winchester, VA driver. "We don't get to race on surfaces like Stateline as it's flat and super slick. Back home it's really slick also, but it's a different kind of dirt and takes a different package. We used some notes from the past here and was able to work on it and just glad to run second to Dave (Hess) as he's pretty dominate here. I've raced with him over the years and knew he was going to be tough. Bryce and Dave were going it at pretty hard and Bryce missed the bottom a little and that's why I got him. Good job to Dave for his run tonight. Thanks to all the fans for coming out. It was a great racing surface. Eriez did a great job with it as you could race all over it and didn't rubber up."
Davis dropped to third for $1,000, but nonetheless was a great weekend following his first Tour win of 2025 on Saturday night at Stateline Speedway. Davis joined Hess and Hardy by receiving a three-pack of premium product from Heritage Wine Cellars. Wonderling was fourth for his 7th top four finish in 10 races to maintain the lead in the $20,000 to-win Flynn's Tire/Gunter's Honey Tour standings. Allen was fifth for his fifth top five of 2025 as he continues to have an excellent sophomore season on the Tour.
For the second straight night, Jason Genco was the top track regular as he went ninth to sixth to continue his lead in the City Chevrolet National Weekly Series and City Chevrolet Track Pack points at Eriez. Breyton Santee, who has three wins this season in weekly competition at Eriez, raced from 15th to 7th. Chad Homan was 8th after starting 11th. Tour regular Mike Wonderling had a good run going 16th to 9th as Billy Henry, Jr. completed the top 10. Ashton Briggs received an Ontime Body & Graphic spoiler kit for finishing 11th. Austin Hauser went 25th to 13 to earn the $50 Precise Racing Products Hard Charger gift card.
Colby Beighey ended the night winning D&V Jewelers Non-Qualifier for the second time in his career. The 32-year-old Taylor, MI driver started third and passed track regular Andrew Chess on lap seven and led the remainder of the 10-lap event to score the $200 win. Chess was second and also received a $50 Holley Performance gift card for being the first feature non-qualifier. Veteran Ward Schell was third over Khole Wanzer and William Pinckney. Fifteen of the 27 scheduled starters took the green flag.
Davis set fast time overall against the 52-car field in FK Rod Ends "Shock the Clock" Qualifying with a lap of 16.563 to earn $100. Winning the $25 FK Rod Ends heat races were Davis, Hess, Jacob Wilber, Hardy, Allen, and Carley, while David Parker, Brad Mesler, and Bill Holmes III won the three last chance B mains. Davis earned a $100 Sunoco fuel card as he became just the season's second repeat Sunoco Dash winner.
Davis also receiving another $100 Sunoco fuel card by being one of the two random draw winners for the Tour races as did Bud Watson, while the $50 Sunoco fuel cards went to Homan, Austin Fitzgerald, Andy Michael, and Gary Youngs. Landrum Performance Springs, which will award a $5,000 “Loyalty Bonus” later in the year to a lucky full-time Flynn’s Tire/Gunter’s Honey Touring Series regular, distributed ‘buy one, get one’ spring certificates to Hess, Shane Crotty, David Parker, Henry, and Drake McCray.
The Flynn’s Tire/Gunter's Honey Touring Series will return to action on Sunday (August 17) at Bradford Speedway in Bradford, Pa. for the July 13 $4,000 to-win make-up feature. The feature field is set; however, a complete new City Chevrolet Weekly Series program paying $2,000 to-win will follow the make-up event. Warm-ups gets underway at 5 p.m. Following Bradford will be McKean County Raceway in East Smethport, Pa. on Friday, August 22 paying $4,000 to-win.
